Are selling and marketing really different?
Yes they are, and it’s important to understand why. In our view, marketing is anything that can influence your ability to make a sale. So, in the big picture, selling is one piece of the marketing puzzle. But, on a more practical level, their goals are different and so are their outcomes. The short answer to “what’s the difference?” is that marketing can get you “to the door” but only selling can get you “the deal.” In other words, marketing builds a company’s visibility and credibility with the right market segments, improving the potential for a sale. Selling, on the other hand, persuades a qualified prospect to become a customer.
