Turning Hunger into Hope

Last year, a remarkable organization called Feed My Starving Children (  www.fmsc.org ) engaged 780,000 volunteers to “pack” 191 million highly nutritious meals designed to save the lives of severely malnourished children. The goals this year are 890,000 volunteers packing 215 million meals.

A tall order, to be sure. But you can help in a fun, hands-on way and network as you’ve never networked before.

You’re invited to join us on Tuesday, August 19,
from 4 to 6 p.m., at Chicago’s Union Station,
for a Special Service and Networking Opportunity

Cocktail Reception Follows at a Nearby Restaurant
Hosted by Productive Strategies

On August 19, we and at least 25 of our clients, prospects, members of our professional networking groups, and readers of this column will be packing some 5,500 highly nutritious meals designed by food scientists specifically to reverse and prevent severe malnutrition in children. We’ll get to know each other by sharing this special service experience and then networking afterward in the usual way at a reception we’re hosting for our packing group.

To reserve your spot for this special experience
just mail a check for $100 payable to “Feed My Starving Children” to:

Two hours of packing meals with others is just plain fun.  It’s one of the reasons FMSC can rely on volunteer efforts and use 92 percent of all contributions to directly support its programs to feed severely malnourished children. The ingredients for one of these life-saving meals cost just 22 cents. Your generous donation will thus fund 455 meals that, dry packed, have a shelf life of about 18 months.

What happens in those two hours? To get an idea, watch this brief video “ US Bank Volunteers Packing for Kids.”

The goal for the Union Station event is for 2500 volunteers to pack 500,000 meals on August 19 and 20.

It’s difficult to appreciate  but these children are not simply hungry, which would be bad enough. These are not children who  might  die, who could die, or with luck might well hold on until help arrives. No, these children will not-cannot-hold on, even until tomorrow. These children are starving, and they will die. All of them. But millions of others can be saved.

The numbers are almost inconceivable. Take 6,200, for example. That’s the number of children who die from hunger or hunger-related causes in the world each day. Do the math and you get 2.6 million children dying of starvation each year.

For the past nine years, Charity Navigator  has ranked Feed My Starving Children among the top one percent of 7,000 charitable organizations for good governance and efficient management. To ensure effective distribution of the meals, FMSC deals directly with a carefully selected network of established, “boots on the ground” humanitarian organizations in each country. Feed My Starving Children accepts no government aid.

A faith-based not-for-profit, Feed My Starving Children is dedicated to saving the lives and restoring the good health of starving children throughout the world regardless of religious belief, ethnic background, or political circumstances.

Please join us on August 19. You’ll be glad you did.

*Your donation pays for 455 meals and is tax deductible. Feed My Starving Children’s 501 (c)3 tax ID is 41-1601449.

Are you selling business to business or business to government or both? There are similarities but also differences that need to be recognized to optimize your results.

Last year after a talk I gave at the Small Business Expo on Business to Business Selling (B2B) , a woman asked for my card because she wanted to meet to tell me about her business and learn more about mine. When we eventually got together she shared that her start-up company’s goal was to console consumers who had suffered the loss of a loved one directly, as she had. But my talk had inspired a new idea: assist funeral homes to improve their services by showing more empathy to their customers who were struggling as she was. I sensed that my talk gave her confidence that, despite the challenges, her business could succeed. What I didn’t realize was that this small assignment for a start-up would eventually have such a big impact on her business as well as an industry.

To date we have covered the Sales, Information, Tactical, and Marketing Plan Levels. Although the fifth level is the last to be discussed, it is often what sets a business in motion when it is founded. Today we will illustrate marketing to support a vision by discussing two very successful businesses.

As a reminder, the Five Levels of Marketing are (1) Sales, (2) Information/Data/Analytics, (3) Tactical or Campaign, (4) Marketing or Program, and (5) Vision/Strategic. We’ve explored each of the first three levels in separate columns in August, September, and October. They are available on our website's Productive Insights collection.

If you believe you have ADHD, you can be more successful by scheduling fewer first meetings and spending that time on more second and third meetings with qualified prospects. For our client, that meant cancelling half the medical CFO conventions his sales rep was planning to attend and investing more time following up with the CFO prospects he had already met. When your discovery is not productive, step back and restart at the point the discussion began to be about whose system is better. That’s an argument you are not going to win. Don’t waste years in prospect meetings in which you ask the same questions every time and get the same answers. Either decide that your product or service isn’t right for this prospect and move on—or broaden your discovery to find a need behind the need. In this hospital case, the hidden need was a fear that because no outside vendors had audited their system they might be in violation of regulations that an outsider would spot right away.
